Mitochondria are the powerplants for nearly all eukaryotic cells. These organelles are known to become dysfunctional in aging and numerous disease states, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. For over 100 years, it has been assumed that cells generate, own, and maintain all of their mitochondria. However, emerging studies reveal that many cells can export mitochondria to other cells in a process known as intercellular mitochondria transfer. The idea that cells can exchange mitochondria has captured the imaginations of many scientists seeking to understand how this recently discovered biological process might contribute to human health and disease.
